Windows can be either internally or externally glazed. So, what does this mean for your home?
Many older units are externally glazed. With this installation method, the beading strips that are used to secure the glazing unit are situated on the outside of the window. This means that the glazing can be removed easily from the outside without the need to break the glass. This can leave your home vulnerable to burglary as it provides for the opportunity for a quiet break in, therefore deeming your home insecure.
Windows that are internally glazed will have the secure beading placed on the inside of the window. This adds security to your home as the glass would need to be broken in order for the beading to be removed from the inside.
Some modern units are externally glazed but provide wedge gaskets on the inside to give more security. Therefore, not all externally glazed window are insecure as the wedge gaskets inside would need to be removed before the outside beading can be removed.
Many older units, pre-2000s in particular, would be externally glazed and would that have wedge gaskets in the inside.
If you have older externally glazed winows without wedge gaskets, we would highly recommend you consider upgrading your windows. You will also benefit from high quality, security and A-Rated windows as frame and glazing technology has improved considerably in recent years.
